Canberra Water Polo Academy welcome teams from all over Australia back to Canberra for the annual Canberra Cup. This is the 8th year Canberra Cup has been held with the competition steadily growing over the years.
This year’s competition features 33 teams from Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. Canberra Cup will be played under the new FINA Junior Rules for the first time, which will add a new dynamic for senior teams as well as helping the junior teams prepare for U16 National Club Championships.
Local team Nordek will return in the men and women’s competitions to defend their titles after tight grand final victories over Tuggeranong Vikings and Gold Coast in 2014. In the men’s tournament the local ACT teams will face stiff opposition with Sydney University, UNSW Wests and Drummoyne sending National League squads down to contest for the cup.
In the women’s competition UNSW Killer Whales will return after being absent for the past few editions. They too are looking to bring down members of their National League team to help bolster their chances of taking out the competition. Ovens and Murray, ADFA/Dragons and Vikings will join UNSW and Nordek in what should be a tightly contested competition.
The boy’s competition is the biggest it has ever been with 11 teams entering. Sydney University Lions were crowned champions in 2014 and will return to defend their title over teams from Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
Finally, UNSW girls will also look to go back to back when they return after taking out the junior girls competition in 2014 over Ovens and Murray. This year we welcome Southern Sports Academy from the Riverina area who will again look to contest for this year’s title. Gosford, Sydney University, Balmain, Vikings, Nordek as well as 2 more teams from UNSW round out the junior girls competition for 2015.
Games will played at the Australian Institute of Sport and Gungahlin Leisure Centres with the competition running from Friday afternoon, with finals being played on Sunday. Results and updates will be posted on the Canberra Water Polo Academy Website and Facebook pages.
We wish the best of luck to all teams competing this year.
