The Canberra Water Polo Academy (CWPA) training programs will be returning in July 2018. The CWPA Talent Development Squad (TDS) and Junior Dolphins (JD) programs will return after sessions ceased at the end of 2016. Since then, there has been a steep decline in the number of participants entering the sport in Canberra and a decline in the quality and quantity of elite training opportunities. CWPA hopes to turn this around and offer a pathway into the sport that provides a training framework to support state and national identified athletes.
The program and its coaches are committed to developing the sport of water polo in Canberra and its surrounding areas. For a number of years the Academy worked hard at recruiting athletes into the sport through the JD program and at its peak had 8 sessions running weekly, with approximately 200 junior players. The TDS program provided higher level training and support for the athletes who wanted to pursue water polo more seriously and produced a number of national team squad members.
For those wishing to be considered for the program, there will be two information sessions available for parents and athletes next week. These sessions will be held in the Silver Room at the AISat the below times;
Information session1 –Tuesday 3 July 6.00pm – 7.00pm @ AIS Silver Room
Information session 2 – Saturday 7 July 10.00am – 11.00am @ AIS Silver Room
The program has some exciting developments and coaching appointments that will be announced at the information session and communicated over the coming weeks.
